Where Every Family Matters

The Dangerous World of Kids’ Makeup

Kids love to play in makeup while playing dress-up. But, do you know what they're made of?

Parents of little kids think it's cute to have their little one play in makeup. But, it's not just mom's makeup anymore. Stores offer adorable sets made just for kids, too. However, what lies underneath allure of the pretty colors could be more harmful to your little one than you think.

Popular jewelry stores, such as Claire's and Justice, offer loads of fashionable, trendy makeup kits for kids of all ages. What you may not know is that these kits could pose a threat to your child's health. It all began in 2017 when reports arose of "asbestos contamination in certain cosmetic products sold by Claire’s and Justice retailers," states the FDA after tests revealed the contamination. A recall was issued then on many of the stores' kits and now there's updated news on the incidents today.

According to the report, the FDA states, "Those tests confirmed the presence of asbestos in three of the product samples collected from Claire’s and one of the product samples collected from Justice." What's alarming to parents is that some little kids not only smear this makeup all over their faces, hands and … counters, but some also ingest it. You know you've had that one child that liked to eat chapstick.

Because of the recent testing results, the FDA issued a statement to the retailers to recall these products:

  • Claire’s Eye Shadows – Batch No/Lot No: 08/17
  • Claire’s Compact Powder – Batch No/Lot No: 07/15
  • Claire’s Contour Palette – Batch No/Lot No: 04/17

However, according to the FDA, Claire's refuses to comply with the recall. So, parents are urged not to let their little ones play with this makeup.

But, Claire's has issued a statement on Twitter saying, "There is no evidence that any products sold by Claire’s are unsafe."

With all the trendy colors and shades with glitter in them, one must wonder what else could be a danger to the youthful kids' skins.
