Shopping Carts Upgraded for Safety

Headed out for groceries? Before you make use of the shopping carts with Baby is in tow, be sure you know what you're doing.

We see it every day. A busy mom hurrying into the store with an infant carrier tugging on her arm. She needs the cart room for groceries and opts to plop her infant’s carrier into the seat at the front. However, this is a BIG no-no!

Shopping carts are the culprits behind more than 24,000 child injuries accidents every year. The problem lies with both the parent and the cart itself. You need a safe place to sit your child while doing your shopping. Sometimes, it’s not that easy. Most carts don’t accommodate the littlest shopping buddies. Placing infant carriers in the front seat of shopping carts might seem the most logical solution. But, it’s not. The seat can easily tip out and injure your little one.

So, it’s great news to hear that a company called Safe-Strap is making strides to changing shopping carts. In a recent press release, Meijer locations across the state are outfitting shopping carts with the Safe-Strap Safe-Dock infant car seat carrier. You’ll start seeing the change beginning this week, too!

As of right now, there are only a few locations (a few Wal-Mart and Publix locations) with this safety feature. You can visit shoppingcartsafety.com to see if your favorite store offers them. You can also suggest that the stores that don’t have them get them!

If your store doesn’t have this safety feature, consider an alternative to shopping with baby. Remember to NEVER place the infant carrier in the front seat of any shopping cart.
