Somewhere on a long ago road trip with family, I remember passing a teepee motel in Arizona. My eye was drawn to the tall cone-shaped things, bringing back thoughts of an earlier time, rustic and peculiar all at once. There still is a teepee motel in Arizona, but you don’t have to drive that far to sleep in one.
Wigwam Village No. 2 is located in Cave City, KY, about 90 minutes from the Middle Tennessee area. Wigwam Village No. 2 — built in 1937 — was purchased by new owners in 2020 and renovated for rental, while four of the 15 units undergo historic restoration.
Included in the updates are flat screen TVs and WiFi. The teepees feature the original 1937 furniture and graphic bathroom tile. The rooms — 15 in all for two, three or four lodgers — are snug and filled with history. If your group is bigger, you can reserve two or three or even rent the entire village!
Eat and Sleep in a Wigwam!
Before modern interstates bypassed much of Historic Route 66, there were seven Wigwam Villages across the country. Only three survive today: Wigwam Village No. 7 in California and Wigwam Village No. 6 in Arizona (the one I saw). Kentucky’s Wigwam Village is the oldest surviving Wigwam Village. Families can enjoy the retro playground and a communal firepit, every evening, weather permitting.
Enjoy a blast from the past by booking a stay; check rates and availability at Historic Wigwam Village No. 2, or call 1-833-WIGWAMS. While in Cave City, you can also do a tour of Mammoth Cave and explore other area attractions as well.
