Discover an inspiring fusion of heritage and creativity at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum! The museum’s Taylor Swift Education Center now features A Community of Artists, a stunning new exhibition showcasing quilts crafted by Nashville high school students and artists from Smart Art + Craft Supplies, an organization supporting adults with intellectual disabilities.
This one-of-a-kind collection is inspired by the legendary Gee’s Bend quilters — a renowned Alabama group celebrated for their bold, abstract quilt designs that have captivated art lovers worldwide.
Behind the Scenes: How “A Community of Artists” Came to Life
Participants in this unique project began their journey at the museum’s Haley Gallery, where they explored contemporary Gee’s Bend quilt masterpieces.
During hands-on sessions, the Gee’s Bend artists shared their creative techniques. Students learned to stitch together repurposed fabric into quilt squares. These squares were later assembled by students and their teachers into a stunning community quilt.
Meanwhile, artists from Smart Art + Craft Supplies used their inspiration from the visit to design and craft their own remarkable quilt pieces, now proudly displayed in the exhibition.
The Legacy of the Gee’s Bend Quilters
The Gee’s Bend quilting tradition has been passed down for generations. Using repurposed fabric scraps, female artists have transformed everyday materials into extraordinary textile masterpieces. Their works have been showcased in world-renowned museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and the Legacy Museum.
Now, this rich artistic legacy continues in Nashville through A Community of Artists.
