February Events at Owl’s Hill Nature Sanctuary

Visit one of Williamson County’s best-kept secrets this February to learn about bluebirds, fungus and more.

If you love hiking and the outdoors, consider Owl’s Hills Nature Sanctuary in Brentwood a must-see attraction — even in February!

Special programming is offered at for all ages throughout the year: including guided hikes, nature workshops, children’s nature programs and more.

Here’s a few events to mark your calendars for this month:

Wild About BluebirdsWild About Bluebirds

Saturday, Feb. 14
Morning Session: 10 am – 12:30 pm
Afternoon Session: 1:30 – 3:30 pm

Prepare the way for this spring’s bluebirds with a brand new nest box. Hike the bluebird nest box trail at Owl’s Hill and learn how this simple, but critical research project helped bring the Eastern bluebird from a threatened species to a common backyard bird. Build its own bluebird nest box in preparation of spring and learn how to find the perfect spot for you to mount it in your yard.

Age appropriateness: Ages 7+
Admission Fee: $45/ group of 2 (includes one nest box kit)
$35/ individual adult (includes one nest box kit)
$10/ additional child under 18 (does not include a nest box kit – must be purchased in conjunction with a group or individual registration)
Children 2 and under: Free

Saturday, Feb. 21
Session 1: 9:30 am – 12 pm 
Session 2: 1 – 3:30 pm

Learn the basics of mushroom cultivation for edible oyster mushrooms, and a bit about the biology and ecology of fungus. Participants will learn how to get started growing mushrooms at home and will assemble an easy to care for oyster grow kit to take home. The program concludes with a short mushroom identification and appreciation hike.

Age appropriateness: Ages 7+
Admission Fee: Cost: $40 (admits up to two, includes one mushroom kit)
Children 2 and under: Free


LEARNHomeschool Days

Tuesday, Feb. 24

They’ve set aside program days specifically for Homeschool families, co-ops and pods to experience hands-on learning at Owl’s Hill.

  • Session I: Predators: Part of the Picture 10-11:30 am

Learn about carnivores, hunters, and predators, the adaptations animals have for catching prey and why predators help maintain the delicate balance of nature.

  • Session II: Animals in Winter 1-2:30 pm

Observe cold weather adaptations of native plants and animals and compare cold weather strategies like hibernation and migration.

Age appropriateness: Ages 5+
Admission Fee: $15 per person (student or adult) per session
