Halloween Safety Tips for Rainy Trick-or-Treating

Rain doesn't have to wash out your plans! Review these tips with your kids.

Rain or shine, Halloween is a big deal, that’s why we have safety tips for rainy trick-or-treating. This year, a slippery forecast is coming at us with Nashville Severe Weather saying rain arrives between 4 and 5 p.m. and will continue up until 9 p.m., but don’t let it spoil the fun. Be sure to go over safety with your kids before they head out!

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

  • Drivers: Stay alert and drive slowly in residential areas.
  • Trick-or-treat early so you can be in the daylight.
  • Consider bringing rain ponchos.
  • Trick-or-treaters need to see and be seen.  Give trick-or-treaters a flashlight to light their way. Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags. If possible, have everyone wear light-colored clothing.
  • Use flame-resistant costumes.
  • Make sure you know where your kids are going. A parent or responsible adult should accompany young children door-to-door.
  • Be cautious around animals, especially dogs.
  • Walk, do not run; look both ways; use sidewalks, paths and use traffic signals.
  • Only visit homes that have a porch light on. Accept treats at the door and never go inside.
  • Stay in your group.
  • Have your older kids check in with you on the hour, via cell phone.
  • Check your child’s candy before eating, remove anything that is open, discard what is unfamiliar.

If you are welcoming trick-or-treaters to your home, follow these safety steps:

  • Light your area well so young visitors can see.
  • Sweep leaves from your sidewalks and steps.
  • Keep your pets inside.
