Oaklands Mansion is nestled in Oaklands Park, a native tree arboretum and natural wetlands. The grounds also include Maney Spring as well as heritage and native gardens. However, before you explore the grounds, take advantage of the new self-guided tours. All this month visitors experience the mansion with the flexibility to wander the halls at their own pace. Don't worry, there is signage that explains the history of the home and collection of antique furnishings and decorative arts. “Highlights of the Oaklands collection include locally made furniture original to the mansion and commercially made pieces like the c.1831 Chickering square grand piano in the parlor. In addition to furniture, the museum’s collection includes photographs, textiles, and even the macabre, including art made from human hair and medical equipment from the mid-1800’s,” says James Manning, executive director of Oaklands Mansion. After exploring the mansion, be sure to see the grounds. Even if you've been before, a self-guided tour is a new way to see it all again. In August, self-guided tours are available during regular visiting hours, Tue – Sat 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sun 1 – 4 p.m. Admission is $15 adults, $10 seniors, $6 students and children, free ages five and younger. Oaklands is located at 901 N. Maney Ave., Murfreesboro. Call 615-893-0022 or visit oaklandsmansion.org.
