Where Every Family Matters

The Singing Tortoise Comes to Gallatin

Kids can get a taste of the art of ballet through an interactive experience involving a talented tortoise.

A magical singing tortoise is one of the ways Nashville Ballet invests itself in the Middle Tennessee community.  Aside from its stage performances at TPAC in downtown Nashville and its School of Nashville Ballet, the organization also offers outreach programs bringing dance and storytelling to kids.

One of its popular offerings is its Dance Me a Story program, and it’s coming to Gallatin on Friday, Feb. 17.

Geared toward kids in grades K – 4, Nashville Ballet dancers will present Dance Me a Story: The Singing Tortoise. This West African folk tale tells the story of a hunter named Ama who meets a magical singing tortoise in the forest. Ama promises not to tell anyone about the tortoise’s unique ability, but he later breaks his word and must face the consequences.

The Dance Me a Story experience includes narration, whimsical costumes and traditional African masks, all helping to make this outing a good introduction to dance as children get to interact with the Nashville Ballet dancers.

The Singing Tortoise takes place at 7 p.m. at The Palace Theater, 146 N. Water Ave., Gallatin. Admission is free.
