Families in Middle Tennessee have TONS of options — except when it comes to putting their toes in the sand. Sure, we have a few lake beaches, but none compare to the salty breeze from an actual ocean. Most families from Nashville and surrounding areas flock South for their beach vacations, but we’re here to tell you that there are lots of reasons to visit Wrightsville Beach. Head East!
When my family and I arrived in Wilmington, North Carolina, we instantly felt more relaxed. We cruised into the charming beach town and saw so much life — people out jogging, walking their dogs and tons of open-air restaurants and bars. Everyone we walked by smiled back at us, and we felt this comforting Southern charm wherever we went.
We’d probably go back for the sunsets alone (no joke, they were so beautiful). But …
10 Reasons to Visit Wrightsville Beach, N.C.
1. Beautiful Beaches
Get those toes in the sand! The beaches are clean, the water is clear and the sand castles are epic. We made one so big that it survived the night (and we’d like to think it’s still there to this day). The locals told us the north end of the beach typically has less people. That’s where we went, and it was not crowded at all. We even found this cool beach mailbox — considered a hidden gem of Wilmington — where people leave love letters, marriage proposals, prayers, messages to lost loved ones, etc.
2. Adventures on the Water
The area offers loads of opportunities for water-based fun. For young families, I recommend Wrightsville Beach Scenic Tours, which offer a Sunset cruise, Eco-scavenger Hunt cruise and even a Pirate Island Treasure Hunt cruise for the kids. Captain Joe’s knowledge is impeccable and the views are outstanding. If that doesn’t float your boat, there’s Wrightsville Performance Sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking, scuba diving and more nautical adventures to be had.
3. Yummy, Fresh Local Food
I didn’t know how much I liked shrimp until this trip. You’ll find plenty of places to eat — most open-air (and some even waterside!). Our favorites were South Beach Grill (quick and casual, they have a shrimp po’ boy that’ll make you say, “oh boy!”), Oceanic (incredible view of the ocean, but a long wait) and The Bridge Tender (our best bites of the trip — get the buffalo shrimp appetizer).
4. The Children’s Museum of Wilmington
Have you ever planned on doing a quick stop somewhere and then look down at your phone and realize you’ve been there for more than three hours? It happened to us after wandering through this four-level, 17,000-square-feet museum on the edge of downtown. The exhibits are interactive and engaging, ranging from a big pirate ship and water table to a pretend grocery store and deli. There’s even an entire wing for toddlers, an art room and outdoor courtyard.
5. North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher
Just South of Wilmington in Kure Beach, the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher has an otter exhibit that will give you cuteness overload (little baby otters swim around, too!). You’ll enjoy watching the stingrays, turtles and the bigger fish in huge window displays. There is also an outdoor area with food, a playground and a boardwalk with wildlife to watch throughout. The aquarium also has a resident bald eagle you can get close to and watch.water table to a pretend grocery store and deli. There’s even an entire wing for toddlers, an art room and outdoor courtyard.
6. Airlie Gardens
Nature lovers can stop at Airlie Gardens, a beautiful and historic garden located in Wilmington. The garden spans over 67 acres and features a variety of plants and wildlife, including azaleas, camellias and magnolias. Our favorite thing was seeing the garden’s biggest and oldest plant: the Airlie Oak. This massive tree is over 400 years old and was planted in 1545.and outdoor courtyard.
7. Battleship North Carolina
Touring a real battleship on your kid’s bucket list? Visit the Battleship North Carolina while in Wilmington. This historic ship served in World War II, and was considered one of the most powerful ships of its time. Make sure to allow yourself plenty of time. This ship is massive and includes nine decks to explore, which can take anywhere from an hour to two hours to see completely!
8. Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park
Need a place to get the wiggles out? Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park takes care of that job nicely. This amusement park has mini golf, go-karts, rock climbing and an arcade (which has been approved by our 6-year-old, claw machine-playing prodigy). The park also has a water park open from May to September, with water slides, a lazy river, bumper boats, a large wave pool and a kiddie area.
9. Wilmington Riverwalk
Need a unique and picturesque spot to stroll? Grab you an ice cream or a hot dog and walk along Wilmington’s Riverwalk. There’s fantastic views of the water, the river bridge and the Battleship North Carolina. You’ll also find markets, outdoor cafes, art galleries and more.
10. New Direct Flight from BNA
Flying with our six-year-old, we really didn’t want to have to take a connecting flight. Luckily, there’s now a nonstop flight through Avelo Airlines from Nashville International Airport (BNA) directly to Wilmington International Airport (ILM). It only takes around an hour (perfect for first time flyers!). The new route operates twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays, perfect for a long weekend getaway. Plus, flight tickets are relatively on the cheaper side, giving you more financial wiggle room for your vacation!
