The Mama Lere Hearing School at Vanderbilt is a listening and spoken language preschool for children with hearing loss. Mama Lere serves children ages 2-5 both with and without hearing loss.
Receiving hearing aids or a cochlear implant opens new possibilities for a child with hearing loss. Learning to make the most of that technology, to listen, communicate, learn, and connect with others, takes time, practice, and specialized support.
At the Mama Lere Hearing School at Vanderbilt, children learn those skills through the everyday experiences of preschool while playing with friends, listening to stories, singing songs, exploring new ideas, and learning together. Our specialized preschool program combines education with listening and spoken-language support to help children build the communication, academic, and social skills they need for kindergarten and beyond.
Teachers of the deaf, audiologists, and speech-language pathologists work together to support each child’s development in listening, spoken language, speech, early literacy, number skills, and learning.
Because every child is different, individual goals are developed collaboratively by the child’s teachers, therapists, and family and supported throughout the school day.
