Where Every Family Matters

AFS Seeks Exchange Student Host Families

Your family can help a foreign exchange student learn about American life in Music City during the 2019-2020 school year.

Each year, 2,300 foreign exchange students from 83 countries come to the United States to study and live with host families. Your family can gain a unique experience by hosting a foreign exchange student. AFS-USA, a leader in international education for 70 years, seeks Nashville families to host high-school students in the 2019-2020 school year.

All types of families can apply. While you are not paid for serving as a host family, you are entitled to a tax deduction for each month the student stays in your home. Students doing a full-year program stay 10 months, arriving in mid-August. Semester students stay five months, arriving either mid-August or mid-January.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS OF HOST FAMILIES

Host families provide exchange students with the following:

• The opportunity to participate in your family's daily lives and events.

• The same care, support and comfort you give to every member of your family.

• A regular bed (not convertible or inflatable). Sharing a room with a "sibling" of the same gender close in age is fine.

• Three quality meals daily, including lunches and meals eaten as a family in restaurants.

AFS students arrive with their own spending money for social and school activities, clothes, etc. As a host family, you do not need to provide spending money or an allowance.

The host family application deadline is Friday, May 31. For more info, including full bios of students coming to Nashville, and applications, visit afsusa.org. For further questions and info, you can also contact Jeffery Burtner at 800-237-4636, ext. 2207, or jburtner@afsusa.org.
