Where Every Family Matters

Autumn in the Oaks Field Trip

Homeschool students can experience a day of washing, churning and learning at a historic home in Murfreesboro.

Are you a homeschool family looking for a fun, educational outing? Oaklands Mansion in Murfreesboro offers a great day field trip for your kids on Thursday, Sept. 22 during Autumn in the Oaks.

Autumn in the Oaks is an educational offering for students in all grade levels. Kids will experience the chores of the mid-1800s along with period crafts, demonstrations, games and other hands-on activities. Kids can roll up their sleeves and get busy with old-time clothes washing, butter churning, quill writing and rug beating.

In addition, artisans and living history demonstrators will be on site, and there will be a scavenger hunt, too. Games include sack races, hoops-n-sticks and graces, plus kids will be able to dress up in 1860s duds. Limited mansion tours will be available.

“It gives us great pleasure to share the house museum and grounds with our community and the surrounding counties,” says Mary Beth Nevills, educational director at Oaklands. “There are so many new families to our area who have not experienced our rich Civil War history,” she adds.

Autumn in the Oaks takes place from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., and admission is $5 per person. Oaklands is located at 900 N. Maney Ave., Murfreesboro. For more info, call 615-893-0022 or visit oaklandsmansion.org.
