While school’s out for the first part of January, sign your kids up for educational fun at the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring. The center incorporates fun, hands-on, inquiry-based learning into all of their winter camps — and there are but a few left! Campers in grades K – 4 are divided into different age groups each with their own Camp Counselor and age-appropriate lessons packed with hands-on games and activities designed to help campers learn, socialize and have fun. Each camp offers the opportunity for exploration of museum exhibits and free play outdoors, weather permitting, as well as a snack each afternoon. Cost is $40 (non-member), $35 (member) per camper per day. Early (7:30 – 8:30 am) and late (4:30 – 5:30 pm) care is also available for $5 per day. Camp hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day, too. Find out how light affects what we see and how we see it. Make your own zoetrope and kinetic sculptures, and find out how light moves.

Light in Art
Paint, sculpt and print with light as you create works of art using out-of-the-box techniques and methods with light as the main source of inspiration and media.

Light in Photography
Kids learn the important factors of taking a great picture with the right light. Hands-on activities include building a pinhole camera and developing your own photographs.
Thursday, Jan. 4
Light in Technology
Build your own light invention and see how much energy you can harness as you explore light in technology with lasers.
Friday, Jan. 5
Light in Space
Campers explore the solar system and see how light moves and travels in space.
