Getting to Know Dr. Kristen Powell

Old Harding Pediatric Associates is so excited to have Dr. Kristen Powell joining our practice this Fall! To help you get to know our newest physician, here are some fun facts about Old Harding’s latest addition!

1.) What made you decide to be a doctor?

“Growing up, I was always the “doctor” in the house. Everyone came to me with their injuries to clean up and bandage— and with six people in the house, there was a lot of practice! In high school, I took an AP biology class and was fascinated. It was a natural choice to combine my love for science with my desire to help others. Becoming a pediatrician was the best decision I’ve ever made. I get to walk alongside parents to provide guidance and medical care to help children grow into healthy, happy, and well-adjusted adults.”

2.) What was the best vacation you ever went on?

“My favorite vacation was our honeymoon in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It is such a beautiful place with tons of fun activities, in addition to lively culture and food scene. I still have dreams about enjoying a hot cup of their Blue Mountain coffee and breakfast on our porch every morning.”

3.) What is your favorite comfort food?

“Cheese, hands down. I have never met a cheese that I didn’t like (with the right accoutrements). I got that from my mom.”

4.) What is the best book you’ve ever read?

“I struggled so much with this question. I’m a big book lover so narrowing it down to the “best book ever” is a challenge. However, I do love a good historical fiction novel— I like being transported to a different period of time and fantasizing about how it would be to live in that time period. One of my recent favorites was “Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald” about the wife of Scott Fitzgerald in the Jazz Age.”

5.) If you could meet one celebrity, who would it be?

“Jennifer Aniston— I grew up on Friends, so I would definitely have a fan girl moment.”

Make sure to tell Dr. Powell hello when you see her in the halls of our Bellevue office!

Getting to Know Dr. Vicky Phillips

At OHPA, we want you to feel like you know the physicians that are caring for your children! Here are some things you might not know about Dr. Vicky Phillips. What else would you like to know?

1.) What made you decide to be a doctor?

“I was a gymnast when I was younger, and I was amazed at what the human body could do so I wanted to learn more about it. After I stopped competing in gymnastics, I then coached gymnastics and cheerleading which is when I learned that I really enjoyed interacting and working with kids. This all led me to pursuing a career in pediatrics.”

2.) What was the best vacation you’ve ever been on?

“Best vacation is hard because travel is one thing I love. I loved spending time in Kenya. It’s a beautiful country with kind people. I firmly believe that traveling to places that are different than what you are used to helps to open your eyes and heart and encourages you to be more accepting of all people regardless of race, religion, culture, etc. I also love the outdoors and would like to see all the national parks. So far, Acadia, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon have been some of my favorites.”

3.) What is your favorite comfort food?

“Macaroni and cheese! And dessert.”

4.) What is the best book you’ve ever read?

“I also love to read, so I can’t give you just one book. I can give a few authors though. Fredrik Backman and Greg Iles are 2 of my favorite fiction writers. Educated, I am Malala, and Five Days at Memorial are all excellent non-fiction books.”

5.) If you could meet one celebrity, who would it be?

“The Obamas! If I had to pick just one though, I’d pick Michelle.”

Dr. Phillips graduated summa cum laude from the University of Alabama in 2010 with her Bachelor’s degree and cum laude from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2014 with her medical degree. She completed her pediatrics residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2017.

Dr. Phillips is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Phillips has a special interest in global health and has traveled to both Haiti and Kenya for medical missions.

A native of Vicksburg, MS, Dr. Phillips enjoys traveling, attending church at St. Augustine’s Chapel, hiking with her dog Angie, music festivals, running, and cooking.
