Where Every Family Matters

Mermaid School Opens Jan. 18

Kids can make a splash in a festive new way by learning to swim like mythical sea creatures.

There's an awesome new aquatic opportunity opening in Nashville that kids are going to flip for. Aquamermaid School gives kids ages 7 and older — and adults — the chance to swim like magical mermaids and mermen.

The school offers a one-hour Discovery Class for $60 as well as four-week ($200) and eight-week ($360) lesson packages. Parents can take classes with their kids, and there are two specific ones involving dads — King Neptune/Little Mermaids (dads and daughters) and Daddy Shark/Barracuda (dads and sons). Party packages are also available.

The school supplies the mermaid tails for the classes, and you can also purchase your own.

Participation requirements include being comfortable in the water, being able to swim at least 25 meters, treading water for one minute and floating on your front and back without assistance before swimming in a mermaid tail.

The school hosts its grand opening event on Saturday, Jan. 18 in which kids and adults can learn more about class offerings. You can register in advance to take an initial class during the grand opening (use code nashvilleopening to get 20 percent off the Discovery Class rate; valid until Saturday, Jan. 18). The children's class for ages 7 – 12 is from 2 – 3 p.m., and adults are from 3 – 4 p.m.

Aquamermaid School is located at the Vanderbilt University Rec Center (2700 Children's Way, Nashville).
