Members of the Murfreesboro Art League are helping the people of Ukraine by using their art to create funds for Ukrainian refugees. They have been making sunflower images in many different mediums, which will be sold to raise money.
“Not only are sunflowers a sign of strength and a symbol of Ukraine, they also help clear the air and ground of toxins, so they were used to help clean up the nuclear waste surrounding Chernobyl,” says Art League President Suzanne LeBeau.
There are different art pieces, from watercolor, pastel, acrylic, and oil paintings to wood burned jewelry. Prices vary. Cash or check is preferred. Donations will be sent to LIRS (Lutheran Immigrant and Refugee Service), because that was one of the few reputable companies that is earmarking money specifically for Ukrainian refugees.
As pieces are sold, they will make more to replace them. If other local artists would like to donate a piece or know more about our organization, you can contact murfreesboroartleague@gmail.com.
More about the Murfreesboro Art League
The Murfreesboro Art League was founded back in 1966 by Clarice Nelson when she moved to town. She and two of her friends decided they wanted an art club. At first, they met in the basement of a local bank, but when the city of Murfreesboro was making Cannonsburgh Village as part of the Centennial celebration in 1976, the art league purchased a part of an old warehouse in the village and converted it into an art gallery and classroom.
Their Cannonsburgh gallery features a variety of pieces, from abstracts, to photos, to oils, watercolors and acrylics, as well as pieces in some of the more unusual mediums. Some of our artists have small objects, cards, bookmarks, and prints for sale, and we have an Artists’ Alphabet book for a donation, which helps raise money for our children’s activities.
For those interesting in membership, current dues are under $50 per year. Classes or open studio time is on the first 3 Monday nights of each month. Each month is a different topic, usually with all three classes covering the same medium.
The art gallery is open to the public for free viewing. For more information, visit murfreesboroartleague.blogspot.com.
Cannonsburgh buildings are open from April until the end of October, but the gates are open Tuesdays through Fridays the rest of the year. People are welcome to come in and view the art for free.
