Summer's almost here! Get your kiddos out in the great outdoors this June with these Murfreesboro Parks & Rec programs.

Check out all the fun outdoor events Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department has up its sleeves this June! Art Pop-Ups at Old Fort Park, Archery for beginners at the Wilderness Station, cave exploring and more will get your kiddo off Netflix and out in the sunlight — for a little while, at least.

Checkers at Cannonsburgh Village

Tuesday, June 4, 11, 18
Time: 10:00 AM2:00 PM
Sit a spell and play a game of checkers under the shade trees in the village on Tuesdays, June 4, 11 & 18 from 10am-2pm. Pack your lunch and spend time in the village. Bring a friend and play a game or two! Weather permitting.  Checkers and Tick-Tac-Toe at the picnic tables are also available during the summer from 9am-6pm.  *Free for all ages*

Summer Fun with Games & Activities at Cannonsburgh Village

Bring your family and friends to play yard games under the shade trees of the village, relax while coloring at the picnic tables, or explore the village while completing a scavenger hunt. Enjoy the warm summer weather by working a puzzle on the porch of a log cabin in the village. Activities are on Thursdays, June 6, 13, & 20, from 10am-2pm.  Free for all ages.  Weather permitting.

Creek Snorkel

Archery for Beginners at the Wilderness Station

How’s your aim? Want to find out? Come out to the Wilderness Station where an archery instructor will lead a class on the basics of a bow and arrow. 1-mile hike on a paved trail is required to the archery field. Please contact Outdoor Murfreesboro to let us know if you need assistance. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Bench Press Competition at Patterson Park

Time: 9:00 AM12:00 PM
The lifter must lie on their back with head, shoulders and buttocks in contact with the bench surface. The feet must be flat on the floor (as flat as the shape of the shoe will allow). Your hands and fingers must grip the bar positioned in the rack stands with thumbs around grip.  Weight Classes for men: 148 lbs. and under, 165 lbs., 181 lbs., 198 lbs., 220 lbs., and 221 and over.  Weight classes for women are under and over 132 lbs.

Juneteenth Festival

Juneteenth is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, the emancipation of African- American slaves throughout the former Confederacy of the southern United States. Celebrated on June 19, the word is a portmanteau of “June” and “nineteenth”. This is a festival for the celebration of Juneteenth which will be commemorated on June 15th this year. We will have vendors, food trucks, poetry/singing performances, and games.

Sunset Paddle Boarding

Cave Exploring

Join us on an adventure to one of Tennessee’s many wild caves! There will be lots of crawling over rocks and mud. This adventure is not for your casual outdoorsman. Upper body strength and balance is necessary in all wild caves. We will meet at the Wilderness Station.  Transportation and all equipment are provided. Ages 10 and older.  Program difficulty Rating: (3)-challenging.

Toddler Time With Thomas

Fridays in June

Cheering. Laughing. Giggling. All three are guaranteed with one of our favorite programs:  “Toddler Time with Thomas” Every Friday at Sports*Com from 10am-11am, Thomas leads children (ages 5 and under) in an array of engaging activities and FUN. With a focus on body part recognition, cognitive skill development, and the knowledge that little ones love to play – that’s just what they do while they learn to wait their turn, follow directions and work together to accomplish simple goals.
