Now a Certified Native Tree Arboretum
On Thursday, May 17, Oaklands Mansion hosts a grand opening and ribbon cutting beginning at 9 a.m. for the Native Tree Arboretum at Oaklands Park. Experience the former grounds of this historic plantation, now open as a public park. Oaklands Park, a native tree arboretum and natural wetlands, includes Maney Spring as well as heritage and native gardens. An arboretum is a botanical collection of trees that is intended, at least in part, for scientific study. To be certified by the Tennessee Urban Forestry council, an arboretum must be open to the public with trees that are labeled, properly protected and well maintained.
Recipient of Grant for Outdoor Classroom
There will soon be a new outdoor classroom at Oaklands due to the recent grant from The Christy-Houston Foundation awarded to the museum. The grant provides funds to create a more dynamic experience for school children as well as residents and tourists. This new space around the historic detached kitchen, root cellar and herb gardens opens up the back façade of the mansion — of which most visitors never see. The new classroom will the center of learning about medicinal and culinary uses of herbs in the period garden. The root cellar and detached kitchen will aid in the interpretation of food from plating, through harvest, preservation and preparation. Oaklands is located at 901 N. Maney Ave., Murfreesboro.
