If you and the kids are hankering for a cold, sweet treat, consider popping into Woolworth on 5th in downtown Nashville on a Sunday. Woolworth's "Penny Sunday" is a modern version of its original promotion that started right after World War II.
On Penny Sundays, anyone ordering an ice cream sundae or one of the banana splits on the menu will be brought six gold balloons. Each balloon contains a slip of paper that determines the price of the dessert. Price options include 1 cent, 10 percent off, 15 percent off and 25 percent off. Pick a balloon to pop, and whichever price you get is the price you pay.
Woolworth on 5th's traditional ice cream sundae ($6.50 regular price) comes with two scoops of ice cream and your choice of toppings (you can add a brownie, too). You can get into sharing mode with the Jumbo Banana Split (regular price $8.25). It comes with three scoops of ice cream, one banana and enough toppings for two to three people. If you want to get real crazy, go for the Super Jumbo Split regular prize $22.99). It boasts a whopping 15 scoops of ice cream, two bananas, strawberries, pineapple, walnuts, whipped cream, chocolate fudge, caramel, a cherry on top and a celebratory sparkler. It's big enough to sate four to six eager ice cream lovers.
