Strawberry season is here! Prime berry picking for spring’s favorite fruit is May through mid-June. Middle Tennessee boasts several farms offering pick-your-own fun. Kids love a festive berry picking outing, and if you head to one of the farms in an outer-lying county, you can easily make it a fun day trip with the kids.
We’ve rounded up all the farms where you and the kids can do your own berry picking, and we’ve included other berries, too. Pick blackberries and blueberries mid-July through August; raspberries are ripe for the picking July through September.
STRAWBERRY PICKING TIPS
Before you head out, keep in mind these berry picking tips:
• Call before you go. Weather affects strawberries more than most crops, and a large morning crowd can pick a field clean before noon.
• Go early!
• Most farms provide containers, but they may charge for them. When you call ahead, ask if you should bring your own containers.
• Select firm, fully red berries. Strawberries don’t continue to ripen after they’re picked.
• Grasp the stem just above the berry between the forefinger and the thumbnail and pull with a slight twisting motion. With the stem broken about one-half inch from the berry, allow it to roll into the palm of your hand.
• Carefully place strawberries into the containers. Don’t overfill or pack the berries down.
• Wear sunscreen!
• Bring bottles of water and snacks for everyone.
