Where Every Family Matters

Presidential Grandson to be Keynote Speaker at The Hermitage

The eldest grandson of President Harry S. Truman, Clifton Truman Daniel, will keynote the 120th annual Spring Outing benefiting Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage.

The program, “Glimpses of My Grandfather, The President,” will offer stories, insight, and perspective on what it means to have a U.S. President in the family tree. The virtual event will take place at noon Wednesday, May 19.

Clifton Truman Daniel is the eldest grandson of President Truman. Daniel is honorary chairman of the board of the Truman Library Institute, the nonprofit partner of the Truman Presidential Library and Museum located in Independence, MO. He also acts as the board secretary of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation and has authored two books about President Truman’s life.

Spring Outing is a century-old Nashville tradition that began in the early days of the Ladies’ Hermitage Association as a picnic on the mansion’s lawn. Since then, the event has evolved into a major fundraiser held to benefit The Andrew Jackson Foundation and regularly features nationally known speakers who present on a variety of topics, including politics and history.

Past speakers include such notables as former First Lady Laura Bush, NPR’s Mara Liasson, longtime White House correspondent Ann Compton, former Tennessee First Lady Crissy Haslam and former New Jersey Governor, Christine Todd Whitman.

“We are excited to have a keynote speaker who understands the trials and tribulations of presidential responsibilities and the impact they have on presidents and their families. Clifton’s stories will undoubtedly be heart-warming as well as valuable and insightful,” said Howard J. Kittell, president and CEO of the Andrew Jackson Foundation. “This year’s event will undoubtedly look different than it has in past years, but the purpose remains the same: to celebrate what The Hermitage means to Nashville and to the nation, as well as to raise funds for the many education programs and preservation projects we hold every year.”

Spring Outing is co-chaired by Amy Colton and Mary Lea Bryant. Tickets are available at
