Where Every Family Matters

Take Flight at STEAM Fest at Murfreesboro Airport

Families can get an up-close look at aircraft, explore aviation technology and try hands-on activities at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport.

Families can fly on over to the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport (1930 Memorial Blvd., Murfreesboro) for its 5th annual STEAM Fest on Saturday, Oct. 17. The event returns this year in partnership with Discovery Center’s Tennessee STEAM Festival, which runs Oct. 11 – 24 at various venues.

Visitors can learn how airplanes fly, take a virtual flight in an aircraft simulator and see large charter aircraft and smaller planes up close. Vanderbilt LifeFlight and U.S. military helicopters will also be available for viewing.

The 101st Airborne Division will display a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, while the Tennessee Army National Guard will bring a UH-60 Black Hawk. Vanderbilt LifeFlight will showcase one of its medical evacuation helicopters.

“The STEAM Fest provides a wonderful opportunity for children and adults to talk with and ask questions of these professions that work with these vehicles every day,” says Airport Director Chad Gehrke.

Middle Tennessee State University’s aerospace program will feature aircraft and drones, display jet and piston engines and open its aircraft engine lab for tours. Microsoft Flight Simulator will also let visitors virtually fly a plane they have just seen at the airport.

The event will offer activities for children and adults, including a paper airplane station where participants can build and test their own creations. The Experimental Aircraft Association will teach visitors how planes fly, and the Civil Air Patrol will share information about its mission and community support.

City of Murfreesboro departments will also display vehicles and equipment used in their daily work. Participants include Murfreesboro Police, Murfreesboro Fire Rescue, the Street Department, Solid Waste Department and Parks and Recreation.
