Oh, the joy of making music! High school musicians across the mid-state have an opportunity to become a part of the Tennessee Youth Symphony (TYS) with two audition dates this month.
ABOUT THE TENNESSEE YOUTH SYMPHONY
TYS is a full orchestra consisting of strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion and harp. The orchestra is designed for musically talented and highly motivated high school students who have interest in performing a variety of repertoire including classical, contemporary, jazz and multicultural.
Part of the orchestra members' education throughout the series includes master classes and sectionals led by members of the Nashville Symphony, university professors, recording musicians and other educators.
During the season, the TYS presents fall, holiday and spring concerts. In addition, TYS performs at several community events, including the Nashville Symphony's Free Day of Music at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. There are recording opportunities, too. TYS musicians have recorded at Historic RCA Studio A as well as Ocean Way Studios.
TYS auditions take place Monday, Aug. 19 from 4 – 8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 24 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Auditions take place at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (4905 Franklin Pike, Nashville).
Youth musicians can audition for Prelude Strings Ensemble, Youth Symphony or Jazz/Rock Ensemble. Each area has specific audition requirements you can find HERE.
Auditions are by appointment only by filling out the Audition Registration Form. There is a $25 audition fee payable at the audition (or online). For those accepted and join the orchestra, the audition fee will be applied toward tuition ($330 for the year).
