The Hendersonville Performing Arts Company and JSto Productions present to nights of New World Spirituals 1619 – 2019: A Black History Celebration in conjunction with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's holiday weekend. The performances takes place Jan 19 – 20 at 7:30 p.m.
New World Spirituals is a project created by James W. Story, a retired professor of music and former chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin.
The celebration will include new vocal and instrumental arrangements of Negro Spirituals from Story's latest CD, New World Spirituals: 1619 – 2019. Visual imagery and interpretive dance will enhance the music. In addition, the performance will include "Slave Narratives" written by Bakari Jamal King (Janice Thomas will perform them). There will also be an African drumming troupe and an all-star gospel choir.
